Random Acts of Poetry

Stone

I may have been this pebble
long before the earth
tore the moon from its heart,
or the blue boulders clashed
and tumbled off their edges.

Later, a Paleozoic moment
in a flooded cave:
I held a latent universe
rolled like a scroll
in trilobite synapses.

I knew nothing
but a salt solution then,
and crinkled sand,
and waves heaving epochs
against a vanished shore.

In me I keep the stone I was,
the lizard I became.
He is not dead, only sleeping
on some sun-warmed table rock,
digesting the dream of time.

Photo of the Week

dirty dicks

Dirty Dick's is a noir specialty store for all your private-dick (private-eye) paraphernalia: magnifying glasses, deer-stalker caps, fingerprinting powder, evidence containers, disguises, Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler novels, wrinkled trench coats, gun moll pin-ups, snub-nosed revolvers, etc.

Actually, I just made that up. This is a pub I passed by in London while on one of the walking tours. I didn't go inside (I did patronize a few other pubs), but I couldn't resist photographing this facade, which has so much character and such a charmingly alliterative name. Click it for a close up. It'll make you want a pint.

Yikes Trike

This is why cars have four wheels -- not three.

Thanks, Joe A. Thank you so much.

Bang! Bang!

Watch an animated version of The Beatles' bizarrely jaunty little ditty about a serial killer here.

"Pataphysical"? I always thought it was "metaphysical".

'YOU are the Plastic Ono Band'

I guess everything comes back in some form if you wait long enough.

I used to play the album Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band in college just to freak people out. As you may have heard, the POB has reformed (reunited?) and even performed in concert at the Brooklyn Academy of Music last night, with original band members Ono, Eric Clapton, Klaus Voorman, Alan White, new member Sean Lennon, and a bunch of guest stars. I would have liked to have seen that, but there are videos of recent performances on YouTube, and maybe some of the BAM show will show up on there eventually as well.

Red Room Redux

Ariana Delwari isn't a singer or songwriter who does anything for me, though her Hollywood-by-way-of-Afghanistan background is at least unique. But David Lynch's new promo video for her album, Lion of Panjshir, is interesting in one respect: he seems to have filmed her in the Black Lodge, complete with red drapes and windy sound effects. (Scroll down to second video.)

Sexy Sadie, What Have You Done?

Right now, David Lynch is in India, filming "kind of" a documentary about guess who? How interesting this will be depends on those two little words "kind of", I think.

"Civilization"

Watch an amazing QuickTime video that reminds me of a Hieronymus Bosch painting -- except it's animated.

David Lynch & Crispin Glover's Big Blockbuster

These videos are dumb, but the guys nail the vocal impressions.

Lost Highway

Here's a thrill-a-minute (actually two minutes and 44 seconds) ride across New Jersey's Pulaski Skyway, one of the most terrifying stretches of highway in America. (I hate driving across it.) I just finished reading Steven Hart's excellent book about the Skyway, The Last Three Miles. Watch out for those pot holes....
