Musings and oozings (mostly about words) by Michael Gates
It is the Valium of the masses or something like that.
ReplyDeleteI would say:religion is considered true by the less educated, false by the more educated and necessary by the wise. The ruler of the most powerful nation seems to take pains to stand for religious freedom and keep his own faith out of the picture for which he loses popularity. The educated know the facts, the wise have a better perspective from which to view them.
ReplyDeleteI believe you mean the Opiate of the people... much or less the same...
ReplyDeleteYou're both half right, it's "the opiate of the masses"
ReplyDeleteI think he was kidding about the Valium remark.
ReplyDeleteLoves it.
ReplyDeletedylan: I don't find you very wise if you consider religion a necessity. It's rather an evil way of doing good, a lazy way of making sense and a naive way of opening your mind.
ReplyDeleteI would say the fishes nailed it.
I disagree that religion is necessarily considered wrong by "the wise"-as if all wise people disagree with it. Thomas Aquinas, the Catholic, gave some of the most brilliant argues for theism ever, and C.S. Lewis was a very wise man who made excellent strides in apologetics for Christianity spcifically.
ReplyDeleteyou know what Jesus did with fish...
